The second publication in the series presents a further 48 pioneering projects that are doing pioneering work in their sustainability endeavours. This collection deliberately sets itself apart from the classic catalogue of successes. It not only celebrates, but also reflects. Each project description contains an info box on a lived culture of error with challenges and lessons learnt, which highlights specific setbacks and the insights gained from them. The aim: an honest, practical and inspiring collection of resources for anyone who wants to develop sustainable projects in tourism or think ahead.
Sustainable tourism is much more than environmentally friendly action - it is a dynamic process characterised by innovation, responsibility and a willingness to learn. In an industry that is under constant pressure to change, it is not only the successes but also the challenges and setbacks that pave the way to a better future. This is precisely where the second edition of the publication ‘Sustainability in Austria’ comes in: it not only recognises flagship projects with a focus on sustainability, but also places a special emphasis on a culture of error and the sharing of learning experiences.
This second edition is exemplary of a new openness in tourism - one that encourages, inspires and invites imitation. It is both an invitation and a tool: for decision-makers, tourism professionals, developers and interested parties who have understood that progress lies not in avoiding mistakes, but in overcoming them productively.
"I am convinced that these best practices are not only a strong sign of our industry's commitment - they are also a valuable source of inspiration for many other initiatives. Let us be inspired by them. And let's continue to work together to ensure that Austria remains one of the most sustainable tourism countries in the world - in the spirit of a future fit for grandchildren for all."
- Astrid Steharnig-Staudinger, CEO of Austria Tourism

With a Focus on Challenges and Successes
In this second publication, we have once again embarked on a journey of discovery through Austria's diverse, sustainable tourism landscape.
Over 160 pages, we have shed light on the initiatives of various stakeholders who are doing pioneering work in their sustainability endeavours. We were particularly keen not only to showcase perfection, but also to outline the challenges along the way. What would the project initiators have liked to have known earlier? What solutions were developed with the various stakeholders involved? Successful sustainability work in tourism always endeavours to consider and harmonise the environment, socio-cultural well-being and economic efficiency in equal measure.
Thanks to the 48 projects on the previous pages, we have seen how innovation and commitment are paving the way for responsible tourism. These examples should not only reflect the sustainable side of tourism in Austria, but also serve as a beacon for the domestic industry. The sustainability journey is an ongoing process that requires the courage to rethink and act. Each and every one of us is called upon to be part of this change - by making conscious decisions that take into account not only our immediate surroundings, but also the global community. Austria's commitment to sustainable tourism is an encouraging example that change is possible.
May this publication serve as a source of inspiration to see the path towards sustainable tourism as an opportunity and motivate us to continue to positively shape the future. And of course, there are many more pioneers of sustainable tourism than we have been able to present in the two publications we have published so far. Thank you very much for your commitment to the sustainability of Austrian tourism.
