The enlargement of the EU has put Austria very much at the heart for Europe! The current preparations for this summer's UEFA EURO 2008™ (co-hosted with Switzerland), the lead up to Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture, and in 2009 the bi-centenary of Joseph Haydn’s death will highlight this and further enhance our reputation as reliable partners, perfect organisers and charming hosts while also gaining further international focus on the country overall.
Tourism has been developing steadily and successfully over the past 50 years. The industry accounts for more than 8% of the annual GDP and represents one of the most important and fastest growing sectors of Austria’s economy. Investments in the leisure sector are at record levels with investments in transport infrastructure, enhancement of ski lift systems, summer sports infrastructure – for example; the country now boasts over 140 golf courses and will host a men’s PGA European Tour Event again this year – and the hotel sector being particularly strong. These investments are geared to extend a sophisticated, sustainable year-round range of tourism products with international appeal.
The number of British and Irish visitors keeps growing! British and Irish holidaymakers testify that the stunning scenery, the wealth of musical and cultural heritage, the warm friendly “Austrian Welcome”, excellent value for money and the apparent “environmental consciousness and cleanliness” are key criteria for choosing Austria as their holiday destination. Visitors from the UK have grown by about 100,000 over the last five years reaching 850,000 at the end of 2007, while the number of Irish holidaymakers has more than doubled to nearly 60,000 over the same period. More importantly, research clearly shows that Austria has good potential to grow its market share even further over the coming years.
